Penguins - The most beloved animal in the Southern Hemisphere.

Over 90 penguins from three species inhabit the South Pole Spectacular of Ocean Park at 8-10°C, including king penguins, the world’s second largest penguin, dramatic southern rockhopper penguins, one of the world’s tiniest penguins and white-bonneted, gentoo penguins, which sport unusual coloured eye markings.

Threats & Conservation

Among the 3 species that inhibit at South Pole Spectacular, Southern rockhopper penguins have declined rapidly by an estimated 30% over the past 3 decades. Commercial fisheries have reduced the availability of food sources, while climate change has affected the marine food web. Both Gentoo Penguin and King Penguin are threatened by climate change which shifts their prey and diminishes penguins’ habitat.
